When it comes to wiring and branch shaping my bonsai trees, having the right tools makes all the difference. Over the years, I've tried a myriad of supplies, some of which ended up being just a gimmick while others became staples in my workshop. Today, I want to share with you the best tools and supplies I actually use for wiring and shaping my bonsai trees.
The Essential Wiring Tools
- Bonsai Wire
The backbone of any wiring project, bonsai wire is available in both aluminum and copper. I prefer aluminum for most of my wiring because it’s lightweight, easy to work with, and can hold its shape well. I usually keep a variety of gauges on hand:

I find the 1.5 mm wire is the perfect balance for guiding most branches without damaging them.

A good pair of bonsai wire cutters is essential. I’ve gone through several pairs, but my favorite is the double-spring cutter. It gives me precise control, and it cuts through wire without leaving jagged edges. Expect to pay around $15 to $25 for a decent pair.
- Bonsai Pliers
I recommend getting a set of bonsai pliers, which are designed specifically for manipulating wire. They help in twisting and tightening the wire around branches. I invested in a quality pair for about $20, and they’ve been worth every penny.
The Best Branch Shaping Tools
- Bonsai Scissors
My trusty bonsai scissors are a must-have for any branch shaping. With a sharp edge, they can cleanly cut leaves and small branches. I’ve found a pair that costs around $18, and the comfort of the grip makes them easy to use for extended periods.
- Concave Cutter
When it comes to shaping larger branches, a concave cutter is essential. This tool creates a clean cut that promotes faster healing. I spent about $30 on mine, and it has dramatically improved the aesthetics of my trees post-pruning.
- Rake and Comb

A good bonsai soil mix is vital for the health of your tree. I create my own blend, combining akadama, pumice, and lava rock in a 2:1:1 ratio. A 5-liter bag of each ingredient costs about $20 total, and this blend helps with drainage and root aeration.
- Wiring Clips
